BCSO releases app for people to report crimes anonymously

Residents will be able to report crimes anonymously and follow up with deputies directly under a new app launched by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.

Tip411 gives our residents a completely anonymous way to report crime, which will allow us to respond faster, solve cases more effectively, and continue building trust with the public,” Sheriff John Allen said in a news release.

BCSO spokesperson Jayme Gonzales said the app allows users to submit anonymous tips on things like drug activity and violent crimes; follow up and have anonymous conversations with deputies; and receive alerts and news releases.

“Tip411 is to help solve crime and provide the community with the opportunity to connect with us directly without needing to call dispatch to make a tip,” she told the Journal. “You can upload video and photo(s) to assist with the investigation.”

The free app is available on the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store, or by visiting the BSCO website.

BCSO previously had another app that allowed people to submit tips, but it was not anonymous and did not allow for two-way communication, Gonzales said.

“They both provide the ability for the community to receive push notifications and alerts from our office if you sign up,” she said. “The Sheriff App was basically our website in app form and highlighted recruiting and other tabs found on our website, and it was incredibly expensive.”

The new platform is designed to help BCSO “enhance community engagement,” tip411 President Terry Halsch said.

Gonzales said the app is “not for emergencies. If you need immediate law enforcement assistance, call 911.”
