Low-income housing in Albuquerque’s South Valley has been upgraded with $1 million from New Mexico’s Community Development Block Grant Program. Bernalillo County unveiled the upgrades recently with a ribbon-cutting.

There were 75 units upgraded at the El Centro Familiar and the Seybold Village housing complexes. Sidewalks were repaired outside of both complexes, while 21 of the units got new sliding glass doors, exhaust fans, gutters and thermostats, and 54 units received thermostats, exhaust fans, new walk-in showers, windows gutters and weatherized roofing.

“It’s great to see the work being done here,” District 2 Commissioner Steven Michael Quezada said. “The South Valley has often been overlooked by important programs like this, and so I’m happy to see Bernalillo County and the state come together to give the residents the same amenities that other people might take for granted.”

All 75 units have tenants, according to county spokesman Austin Munn.

The 54-unit complex is for senior housing or for people living with disabilities, while the 21-unit complex serves people who are disabled or mobility impaired. Both complexes have income-based units, so families pay 30% of their adjusted income for rent and utilities.
