ABQ BioPark Zoo gorillas will be getting a home makeover.

The zoo will renovate three areas into two large spaces “with climbing opportunities, new views for guests and gorillas, and lots of creature comfort,” a BioPark report states.

BioPark spokesperson Greg Jackson said he did not know the square footage of the space.

“The new habitats will have more vertical structures for climbing as well as water features, special enrichment zones, and expansive views for the apes,” ABQ BioPark Director Brandon Gibson said in an Aug. 6 news release.

The expanded area will offer outdoor warming and cooling areas and indoor habitats “to ensure the gorillas’ comfort year-round,” Gibson said.

The $22 million project, which is in the design phase, is being funded through the city’s 1/8-cent gross receipts tax.

The expansion is one of several ongoing projects listed in the BioPark’s gross receipts tax annual report. A few others include:

  • Phase two of Australia’s exhibit expansion, which is scheduled to start later in the year.
  • Butterfly pavilion renovations: This includes a new entrance and improvements that support biosecurity and animal care, according to BioPark.
  • Construction of the Science, Health and Aquatic Research Center.
  • Revamping the Children’s Fantasy Garden.

“The BioPark is growing in visible and meaningful ways, from immersive habitats to reimagined spaces,” Mayor Tim Keller said in a statement. “These upgrades ensure that our BioPark will continue to be a leader in animal welfare, conservation, and education.”
