Former Bernalillo County Sheriff Manny Gonzales has been disqualified as a candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Gonzales did not acquire enough signatures to qualify as a Senate candidate for the Republican nomination, leaving Nella Domenici, daughter of the late Sen. Pete Domenici, as the only GOP candidate in the Senate race against incumbent Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich.

The former sheriff filed 875 signatures but needed 2,351 in order to qualify, according to New Mexico Secretary of State’s Office spokesperson Alex Curtas. Gonzales announced his candidacy in January after switching parties to run as a Republican.

Gonzales made headlines last year when he was named by federal authorities in an alleged scheme to import machine guns for resale along with his former undersheriff Rudy Mora.

Gonzales’ campaign could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
