Former middle school coach sentenced for sexting student

A former middle school coach was sentenced this week to five years of probation for sending sexually explicit Snapchat messages to a student athlete in January 2024.

Treyjan Skye Filipe, 25, who worked at Sandia Preparatory School, pleaded guilty Dec. 5 to two counts of criminal sexual communication with a child and one count of criminal solicitation by electronic communication, all fourth-degree felonies.

Filipe’s attorney, Christopher Marlowe, said that his client was struggling with personal issues at the time and expressed regret for his actions at a sentencing hearing Tuesday in 2nd Judicial District Court.

“He showed a lot of contrition in court yesterday,” Marlowe said in a phone interview Wednesday. “He had a wonderful job there at Sandia Prep. He lost a golden opportunity and now he works at McDonald’s.”

The sentence handed down Tuesday by Judge Britt Baca also requires Filipe to register as a sex offender for 10 years.

Filipe was arrested Feb. 22, 2024, after Albuquerque police were alerted that a student-athlete at the private middle school had received sexual videos and photos on Snapchat from a coach at the school.

Filipe also sent a message asking “to have a sexual meeting with the student,” prosecutors wrote in court records.

Police were notified through the Say Something app — an anonymous reporting system that allows students to report classmates at risk of harming themselves or others.

“He was extremely cooperative with law enforcement,” Marlowe said of Filipe. “He was extremely cooperative throughout the entire process.”
