Legislative veteran Greg Nibert is switching chambers.

Nibert, who was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 2016, was appointed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Friday to fill the District 27 Senate seat vacated by former Sen. Stuart Ingle, the Governor's Office announced.

Ingle, a Republican from Portales, announced his retirement from the Legislature in October, having served as a state senator since 1985.

A Roswell Republican, Nibert received his bachelor's degree from the University of New Mexico and his law degree from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, according to the announcement.

Senate District 27 includes Chaves, Curry, De Baca, Lea and Roosevelt counties in the east-southeast part of the state.
