Gov. Lujan Grisham in Washington, DC, to take part in national Democratic group meetings
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham speaks during a Tuesday news conference about her push for the Legislature to enact a range of public safety proposals this year. The governor traveled to Washington, D.C., on Thursday for a three-day trip focused on national Democratic group meetings.
SANTA FE — As New Mexico lawmakers wade deeper into the 60-day legislative session, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is in Washington, D.C., to take part in national Democratic group meetings.
The governor, who crisscrossed the nation last fall to stump for Kamala Harris, traveled to the nation’s capital on Thursday to attend the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting, a spokeswoman said.
The DNC is scheduled to elect a new chair on Saturday, after an election cycle in which Democrats lost the White House and control of both chambers of the U.S. Congress.
Meanwhile, Lujan Grisham is also planning to take part in a Democratic Governors Association meeting before returning to New Mexico on Sunday, according to the Governor’s Office.
Lujan Grisham served in 2021 as chairwoman of the DGA, a group that invested heavily in her 2022 reelection campaign.
Some Democratic governors have reportedly urged Senate Democrats to take a more aggressive approach to President Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees, after Trump’s administration issued a memo this week freezing federal grants and loans.
That memo was rescinded two days after it created widespread confusion and concern, including in New Mexico.
Lujan Grisham did not directly mention the Trump administration during her State of the State Address on the opening day of this year’s regular session but has in the past criticized Trump’s record on health care issues.
The governor has also signaled she intends to work with lawmakers to codify existing protections for New Mexicans. That effort could include creating a state health care affordability fund in case the federal government seeks to trim funding levels for Medicaid or other programs.
Per the state Constitution, Lt. Gov. Howie Morales serves as acting governor while Lujan Grisham is traveling out of state.
