Grand jury indicts Albuquerque police officer for alleged sexual solicitation
A grand jury indicted an Albuquerque police officer for allegedly asking a woman for sexual favors in return for leniency in a 2023 incident.
Albuquerque Police Department officer Liam King is charged with false imprisonment with intent to inflict a sex offense and demanding or receiving a bribe by a public officer, which are fourth- and third-degree felonies.
King is also charged with two misdemeanors: violation of ethical principles of public service and criminal sexual contact.
The indictment, which was filed Thursday in 2nd Judicial District Court, does not give further details on the allegations, which occurred on June 25, 2023.
APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said King was placed on paid administrative leave on Oct. 15, when police learned the case was being presented to a grand jury.
An internal probe into the allegations by APD resulted in King being disciplined, but he was allowed to keep his job.
Gallegos said APD’s Internal Affairs investigators began looking into the matter after the allegations were raised in 2023.
“Officer King faced discipline for policy violations at the conclusion of that investigation,” he said. “The criminal allegations were referred to criminal investigators and the results were forwarded to the DA’s Office.”
Gallegos would not elaborate on what policy violations were found during the internal probe and what discipline was given to King as a result.
At some point, King was added to the 2nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office Brady-Giglio disclosures, which is a list of law enforcement personnel with credibility issues.
