I-25 improvements between Comanche and Montgomery to begin next month
A project aimed at addressing traffic bottlenecks and improving pedestrian and bicycle safety on the Interstate 25 corridor in the middle of Albuquerque will begin soon.
Work on I-25 between Comanche and Montgomery is slated to start early next month and should be completed by spring 2027, according to the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
According to NMDOT, the project will improve safety and reduce travel times for motorists. Additionally, the aging bridges and pavements will be replaced, and barrier-separated, shared-use paths will be added at the interchanges to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Some of the work to be done includes:
- Widening I-25 in both directions
- Adding a southbound lane on I-25
- The construction of two bridges on the Comanche and Montgomery interchanges
- Advanced U-turns for improved east-west connection
“The purpose of the project is to improve the efficiency of the freeway mainline and associated ramp, frontage road, and interchange systems and to update and prepare the north I-25 corridor for continued growth in the Albuquerque metropolitan area,” NMDOT said on a project website. “The need for the improvements to the corridor is due to travel demand and congestion, physical deficiencies, and safety issues.”
NMDOT said drivers should plan ahead to account for the extra time on the road due to the work, and construction could bring increased noise and dust to nearby properties.
NMDOT District 3 spokeswoman Kim Gallegos said the project cost is about $268 million and covered by federal and state funding.
The Comanche to Montgomery project is just the latest work being done along the I-25 corridor.
Stretches to be worked on include the Paseo del Norte interchange and Rio Bravo interchange. The next project on the docket is the I-25/Gibson interchange, though that is not expected to be done until after 2027, Gallegos said.
A groundbreaking event is scheduled from 10-11 a.m. July 16 in front of the Cloverleaf Apartments, 4300 Bryn Mawr. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham will speak about state investments made on I-25 to improve safety and travel times.
