I-40 westbound in Gallup reopens after overnight closure

Published Modified

Interstate 40 reopened in western New Mexico early Friday morning.

At about 8 p.m. Thursday, I-40 westbound was shutdown from mile marker 26 in Gallup into Arizona due to a snowstorm that produced as much as 2 feet of snow in mountainous areas in northern Arizona, according to the Associated Press.

New Mexico Department of Transportation spokeswoman Delane Baros told the Journal that I-40 was expected to re-open at 8 a.m. Friday.

During the closure, people heading toward Arizona on I-40 were instructed to travel down I-25 then take I-10, she said.

"All the side roads can't take a lot of traffic," she said.
