Las Cruces police identify man killed by train
The BNSF freight train runs through Las Cruces. A collision on S. Main Street Wednesday afternoon killed a man who has not yet been identified.
LAS CRUCES — City police on Tuesday morning identified the man struck and killed by a freight train in the middle of town last week.
Manuel Jose Aguirre, 46, was found at approximately 2 p.m. on Nov. 26 by first responders next to railroad tracks running parallel to the 1700 block of South Main Street, not far from downtown.
Witnesses had reported seeing an individual struck by the northbound BNSF train. Aguirre was found unresponsive after suffering multiple injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Police believe Aguirre was walking north on the railroad tracks and failed to heed audible warnings from the northbound train,” the city stated in a news release Tuesday.
The train came to a stop after the collision and waited while the investigation took place, requiring traffic at two intersections crossed by the tracks to be diverted.
Aguirre’s death was one of a pair of pedestrian traffic deaths in the city in the course of three days.
The fatalities prompted comments at Monday’s city council meeting in support of assessing road safety data and implementing solutions recommended by the Vision Zero Network, which advocates street design aimed at eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries.
