Man accused of fatally hitting man during street race in SW Albuquerque
A man was arrested last week after allegedly hitting a car and killing the driver while street racing in Southwest Albuquerque.
Edgar Silva, 28, of Albuquerque is charged with vehicular homicide and reckless driving. Silva is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center. His attorney could not be reached for comment. According to court records, a detention hearing is scheduled for Monday.
Prosecutors filed a motion to keep Silva behind bars until trial, saying, “Racing on streets is an exceptionally high risk activity. It places many at risk.
“Once there is a collision, the chances of a lethal result are high,” according to the motion. “This case is no exception. The victim was driving in his vehicle headed westbound on Central Ave. He had no opportunity to evade the defendant’s truck. He was absolutely defenseless.”
According to a criminal complaint filed at Metropolitan Court, the suspect’s cousin, who was sitting in the truck during the incident, told police Silva was street racing when he lost control of the pickup and hit the sedan.
It is unclear why it took police about a month to find Silva, and records available Sunday do not specify when he was arrested.
At about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 18, the Albuquerque Police Department responded to a call of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Central and 47th.
According to the complaint, when police arrived they found a pickup with its front tires tires sitting on top of a black sedan in a median. Inside the sedan was a man — later identified as Carlos Lucero — who was pronounced dead at the scene. In the pickup were two men including Silva. Silva underwent surgery for undisclosed injuries that were described as “serious.”
The complaint states Silva’s cousin told police the suspect had gotten into a race with a white pickup when Silva lost control, veered into westbound traffic and hit the sedan. The other truck continued driving.
Pedestrian struck by three vehicles dies
The Albuquerque Police Department is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian and three vehicles in Northeast Albuquerque.
On Saturday evening, police responded to a call of a crash at the intersection of San Antonio and San Pedro, APD spokesperson Rebecca Atkins said.
Atkins said an unknown vehicle was heading east on San Pedro, near San Antonio, when they hit a pedestrian standing in the road before fleeing. Two other vehicles then hit the person, who died at the scene. The drivers of the other two vehicles stayed behind and cooperated with police when they arrived.
She said the case remains under investigation.
