Man fatally shot near Madrid; no arrests made 'yet,' police say
An Albuquerque man with Farmington ties was gunned down outside Madrid on Saturday night.
“No one has been arrested in connection with this, yet,” New Mexico State Police spokesperson Amanda Richards said in an email Monday evening.
Around 10 p.m. Saturday, New Mexico State Police responded to a call of a shot fired on N.M. 14 near milepost 29, just north of Madrid, in Santa Fe County.
When officers arrived, they found Patrick Wheeler, 48, with a gunshot wound, Richards said. First responders unsuccessfully tried life-saving measures..
Another person was with Wheeler, but they were not injured, Richards said.
“The homicide investigation is still active and ongoing,” she said.
In a Farmington High School Class of 1995 Facebook post, Wheeler was remembered as being “the ultimate friend, the kind of person who made every single one of us feel like we were his very best friend.”
“His smile, his laugh, and his way of making you feel seen and important were unmatched,” the post states.
