Man injured during police shooting in Cibola County, officers are OK

A man is in an Albuquerque hospital after allegedly fatally shooting a woman, leading police on a chase and then getting into a shootout in Cibola County on Saturday night.

Jaquari Porter, 24, of Loganville, Georgia, has been charged by New Mexico State Police with three counts of aggravated assault upon a peace officer, shooting at or from a vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, and criminal damage to property, New Mexico State Police spokesperson Amanda Richards said.

Porter is being treated for undisclosed injuries, police said. It is unclear what his condition is.

The officers involved are OK, according to a New Mexico State Police social media post, though it is unclear how many officers were involved in the shooting.

Around 10:30 p.m., the Cibola County Sheriff’s Office received a call to assist the Acoma Pueblo Police Department as it investigated the shooting death of a woman at an Acoma Pueblo gas station off Interstate 40, said Cibola County Sheriff Larry Diaz in a news release.

At about the same time, New Mexico State Police learned that a Be On the Lookout (BOLO) was issued to police asking for help in finding a black SUV driven by a person involved in a shooting and carjacking at Sky City Casino and Hotel, Richards said.

Cibola County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Grants police officers would find the SUV heading west on I-40 where the driver of the SUV — later identified as Porter — hit another vehicle before coming to a stop at mile marker 81, Richards said. Porter got out and fired at police, who then returned fire and hit him “at least once,” according to police.

Earlier that evening, police said, Porter had fled from New Mexico State Police after being pulled over for speeding.

“The New Mexico State Police does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified,” Richards said. “This determination rests solely with the district attorney reviewing the investigation.”
