Parts of New Mexico could see temperatures below freezing late Monday into Tuesday morning.
The lows in northern and east-central New Mexico could range from negative single digits to 26 below zero with the wind chill in Angel Fire, said National Weather Service of Albuquerque meteorologist Randall Hergert.
It will be dangerous for anybody outside exposed to those conditions, he said, adding that frostbite could occur for those who are out for a half hour.
In the Metro area, an extreme cold watch will be in effect from 5 p.m. Monday until 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Lows could range from 3 degrees in Los Lunas to 8 degrees at Albuquerque International Sunport with wind chills dipping below zero, Hergert said.
The frigid temperatures can be attributed to an Arctic air mass coming down from Canada that will cause millions to be under winter storm warnings, the Associated Press reported. This includes a couple of southern cities, Houston and New Orleans, which could receive a couple inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
In the Metro area, the frigid temps will be short-lived. Highs in the Metro area are slated to reach the mid-40s Wednesday and Thursday, then the low 50s on Friday, Hergert said.
