This weekend the public can attend pet adoption events and bring home a furry friend at no cost to help relieve city shelters that are currently overwhelmed. The event, Mission: Pawsible, is inspired by the latest installation in the Mission: Impossible series that released in theaters last week.

“Pet Lovers. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to save lives by adopting a pet. This paper will self-destruct in five seconds,” reads a promotional poster for the event.

City shelters are at capacity with around 1,000 animals in animal welfare’s care, said Animal Welfare Department Deputy Director Susan Ellis.

Alongside adoption, AWD is imploring Albuquerque residents to utilize the city's microchipping services to reunite stray animals with their families so they don’t end up at the shelter in the first place, Ellis said. There are 37 microchip scanning locations across Albuquerque, which includes fire stations, private businesses, APD substations and Animal Welfare shelters.

Prospective pet owners can go to any city shelter to meet adoptable cats and dogs. Each adoption this weekend will include spay or neuter, vaccinations and a microchip for the animal free of charge, according to an Animal Welfare news release.

Adoptions also come with a complimentary voucher for an adoption bundle from Boofy’s Best for Pets to prepare your home for the new arrival, according to the release. The voucher can be redeemed at either of the pet store’s locations.
