Quay County deputy fatally shot man in Logan

A Quay County deputy fatally shot a man while responding to a domestic abuse call in Logan early Wednesday morning, according to New Mexico State Police.

The deputy involved was not identified by State Police.

Matthew Dimas, 38, was allegedly threatening to kill his wife and had fired two shots in the backyard of the residence in the 800 block of 540 Loop before police arrived, according to a State Police news release. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Dimas with a gun and ordered him to drop the weapon.

Dimas refused, according to State Police, and later during the encounter the deputy fired at least one round and struck Dimas. Officers attempted to resuscitate Dimas and he was later transported to a nearby hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The incident is under investigation by State Police.
