'Rust' releases in New Mexico three years after cinematographer Hutchins' tragic death

Published Modified

On Friday, the Western film “Rust” began screening at Allen Theatres across New Mexico, including Alamogordo, Farmington, Gallup, Las Cruces and Roswell. The film’s limited release comes three years after its lead actor, Alec Baldwin, accidentally shot and killed the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins.

While criminal charges against Baldwin were eventually dropped, the armorer on the set, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March 2024.

“Rust” is not being screened in Albuquerque or Santa Fe at this time.

Hutchins’ husband, Matthew, was brought on as an executive producer of the film following his wife’s death, and he has been a strong proponent of the film’s release, according to an Associated Press report.

The cinematographer’s mother, father and sister, meanwhile, remain embroiled in a civil suit against Baldwin, which is being adjudicated in New Mexico. According to NPR, they and their attorney, Gloria Allred, have declined to comment on the film’s New Mexico release this week.

Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey, has spoken out against releasing “Rust,” calling it an attempt by Baldwin to “unjustly profit” off her daughter’s death.

“Alec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death,” she said in a statement issued by Allred, according to The Associated Press.

Early reviews of the film have been generally negative. “Rust” currently has a 48% fresh rating on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 21 reviews.
