State Police IDs woman killed in Friday crash at the Big I

Published Modified

Police have identified the person killed in a late-afternoon crash that touched off a chain reaction and shut eastbound Interstate 40 near the Big I for hours on Friday.

New Mexico State Police said Chamar Gallegos, 26, of Albuquerque, died in the crash. KOAT-TV reported that the crash happened just before 5 p.m.

State Police said in a news release issued Saturday that Gallegos was driving east on I-40 in a Honda Civic and approaching the interchange to head north on Interstate 25.

"Traffic was slow and backed up in that area," police said. "For reasons unknown, the Civic did not slow down with traffic and collided with the rear of a 2019 GMC SUV. The impact caused a chain reaction of collisions with three other vehicles."

Gallegos, who did not appear to be properly wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries, police said. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

State Police said a total of five vehicles were involved in the incident. No other injuries were reported.

The crash shut down all the traffic lanes of eastbound I-40 for about three hours.

State Police is investigating the crash and does not believe alcohol was a factor.
