State receives over $18M to help keep homes warm in winter
The state of New Mexico is getting millions of dollars that will go to help low-income people stay warm during the winter.
On Monday, the New Mexico Health Care Authority received $18.6 million from the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, a federal program that assists eligible lower-income people with their heating and cooling costs.
“No New Mexican should have to choose between staying warm and putting food on the table,” said Niki Kozlowski, director of Income Support Division, in a statement. “This funding ensures that many families with limited income won’t have to make that choice.”
LIHEAP contracts with the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority to assist individuals with weatherization costs that include weather stripping, windows, furnaces, stoves and insultation, Health Care Authority spokesperson Marina Piña said.
“We’re grateful that this funding is coming to New Mexico to help families pay their heating bills and weatherize their homes,” Albuquerque Mayor’s Office spokesperson Staci Drangmeister said. “More resources to help folks who are struggling (are) always appreciated.”
People can use the LIHEAP eligibility tool, a user-friendly resource that allows people to identify whether they are eligible, Piña said.
People who qualify for LIHEAP may qualify for additional support through the New Mexico Gas Company’s heating assistance fund, HEAT New Mexico.
