Tim Keller placed on IR: Mayor will be in boot for 6 to 8 weeks
Mayor Tim Keller, in a walking boot and with a cane, attends an event at the Route 66 Visitor Center on Tuesday.
Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller will be hobbling around for the next six to eight weeks after injuring himself while running a football receiver route.
“I’m quickly getting used to a boot and a cane,” Keller told the Journal in an interview Thursday. “My hope for NIL (name, image likeness), a return to the (Duke City) Gladiators or my draft status have all come crashing down.”
Before being elected mayor, Keller played quarterback at St. Pius X High School, fly-half for the Harvard rugby team and took a few snaps for the city’s arena league team, the Duke City Gladiators, during their 2018 season opener.
The injury — a torn plantar fascia in his right foot — occurred while the 47-year-old mayor was lined up at receiver.
“I also learned as I was running that fade route that I should stick to playing quarterback and not receiver,” Keller said.
The city’s Federal and State Funding Coordinator, David Parkinson, threw Keller the pass. Keller said nobody was covering him as he ran the vertical route last Tuesday at Garfield Park.
The mayor said he would ask a doctor if surgery is required once he’s out of the boot.
