Today at the Roundhouse
We’re officially three weeks into the Legislature, and things are moving quickly. Here are hot-topic bills and fun events to watch for on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at the Roundhouse:
Oil and gas: A bill to increase the maximum royalty rate New Mexico charges oil and gas developers is first on the schedule for the Senate Conservation Committee, which meets at 9 a.m. There’s also a bill seeking to prevent new oil and gas wells within one mile of schools that’s scheduled to be heard in the House Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee at 8:30 a.m.
Public safety: The House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee, meeting at 1:30 p.m., is set to hear multiple human safety bills, including measures that would remove the current statute of limitations for personal injury resulting from child sexual abuse and change criminal statutes around human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children.
Water: Legislators could hear a slew of water- and drought-related bills in the morning, in both the House Agriculture, Acequias and Water Resources Committee and the Senate Conservation Committee.
Chile: A barely two-page-long, bipartisan bill with 29 sponsors would declare August as New Mexico Red and Green Chile Month. It’s scheduled for its first committee hearing before the House Rural Development, Land Grants and Cultural Affairs Committee Tuesday morning.
Celebrating heritage: It’s a busy social day, with events for both Santa Fe Indian School Day and Asian American and Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian Day happening at the Roundhouse.
