Two dead, several critical in Wednesday accident

Two helicopters responded to the scene of a fatal accident near King Road and Sheba Drive Northwest the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 13.

A fiery accident near King Road and Sheba Drive Northwest left two people dead and several others in critical condition Wednesday.

At about 5:30 p.m., the Rio Rancho Dispatch Center received a "vehicle-based crash activation notification pinging" in the area, which lies in Sandoval County, according to the Rio Rancho Police Department. Responding officers found a vehicle collision "engulfed in flames." RRPD and Rio Rancho Fire Rescue rendered aid to occupants of both vehicles.

Two people were declared dead, and multiple other patients in critical condition were transported by ground and air to area hospitals; two helicopters were seen departing the area near King Meadows Park around 7:30 p.m. The accident also closed a portion King Boulevard to traffic until the helicopters cleared the area.

The crash investigation is ongoing, and the names of those involved will not be released pending notification of next of kin.

"On behalf of the Rio Rancho Police Department and Rio Rancho Fire Rescue, we extend our deepest condolences to the families and to all of those affected by this tragic event," RRPD Capt. Jacquelyn Reedy said. "We extend our gratitude to all the doctors, pilots, nurses, EMTs, firefighters and officers who worked diligently to provide care to the injured."
