OPINION: Speak Up!

I sympathize with our congressional Democrats. The BUDGET BILL was horrendous, inflicting a lot of damage on New Mexicans, especially those who depend on Medicaid and SNAP. Should they have voted for the bill just because it had one good thing for the Downwinders? JH

International Court of Justice: Countries have a legal obligation to take action against the “urgent and existential threat” of human-caused planetary heating, hopefully ending America’s ecocidal FOSSIL FUEL EXPANSION under President Donald Trump. Amen. BDS

Regarding (Jul. 24 Journal): What an interesting contrast today. Page A1 gives us the headline about record rain and flooding in Las Cruces and on page A8, we have the president of the New Mexico Oil & Gas Association trying to convince us that her industry has nothing to do with GLOBAL WARMING. Please. TW

Regarding “OPINION: It’s time to reconsider your vote” (July 23 Journal): Dunaway’s op-ed is pathetic in that he uses drive-by points to criticize TRUMP VOTERS. My only frustration with Trump is that he is not moving quickly enough to right the wrongs in government, which Dunaway seems to think are proper. We need true leadership in DC, not wimps. GH

Regarding “OPINION: It’s time to reconsider your vote” (July 23 Journal): David Dunaway needs to “run away” and put his article into the context it was removed from. Every single item he listed about PRESIDENT TRUMP he cherry picked, while omitting the real effects of the policies President Trump has given us. Everyone I know would vote for him again. RS

Last week, PRESIDENT TRUMP, while talking to reporters, brought up his Ph.D. Uncle John, who taught at MIT. True story. But then he went on describe the infamous Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, as a student of this uncle, which is completely incorrect. Kacynski never attended MIT, rather he attended Harvard. EJG

Isn’t it interesting that, according to TRUMP, we don’t have money to feed hungry people or provide medical care for needy people or fund medical research but we have millions of dollars to fly the president and his entourage to Scotland so he can open up his own golf course. AF

What gall TRUMP has again, with his abysmal history of managing his own finances, to think he knows better that Jerome Powell regarding interest rates this time. Not to mention the massive national debt this nation has acquired due to his stupidity. When are people going to get it.? BW

“Headline about BIDEN’S WAR WITH UKRAINE?” When was that? Who won? Do you mean Biden’s firm support for Ukraine against Russia as opposed to the wishy-washy support of the current POTUS? I’ll see your “autopen scandal” and raise you a “ sending Houthi attack plans over unsecured communications” scandal. MY

I wonder how many millions of federal dollars New Mexicans will lose, thanks to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Mayor Tim Keller’s positions regarding ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS? It would be better to show more concern for the needs of all New Mexicans, including those who voted for you, instead putting your political agendas first. DC

UNM med school can train all the DOCTORS they want, but until our brilliant Legislature fixes the malpractice lawsuit issue, they will just graduate and leave the state. BH

The main problems with MEDICAL TREATMENT in New Mexico are a severe shortage of health care workers — especially doctors — and rising barriers to access, driven by high malpractice insurance costs, aggressive legal actions, low Medicaid reimbursement rates and potential hospital closures. SR

Regarding “OPINION: NM can’t accept HEALTH CARE status quo” (July 27 Sunday Journal): Somewhere close to the end of Jay Newton-Small’s op-ed about NM’s medical crisis, she hit the nail on the head. It’s all about our over-abundance of trial lawyers in the state Legislature not being willing to impose limitations on their ability to file medical malpractice lawsuits. Tort reform is needed. FB

My way or the highway. The July 27 Sunday Journal always shows how the NM CONGRESS voted in the past week. There were 11 Senate votes that week and both our senators voted no on every vote. How can we be that divided that it’s party line or nothing? Such a shame. MU

Costco, Home Depot, Comcast, Trader Joe’s ... lots of national chains topping the READER‘S CHOICE. What does that say about our local economy? And c’mon — the Balloon Fiesta swept the event category? Is that really the pinnacle of the city’s identity anymore? What lack of local color and variety. AN

It’s absolutely inexcusable that the STUDENT HOUSING at UNM is not more secure and that anyone can just walk into the dorm rooms. How about ID pass entries at the very least? Is UNM security understaffed? Nobody should be able to enter student housing with a weapon. EN

The temperature is pushing 100 degrees, and the medians and gutters are full of weeds. Why can’t the city ever plan for WEEDS? Do the top leaders not care. It’s very embarrassing. I have told people not to visit during the summer because of this very problem. GC
