Boxing: Olayo-Muñoz wins by unanimous decision in Germany
Las Cruces’ Joscelyn Olayo-Munoz, here displaying one of her many USA Boxing title belts, won her first international bout on Thursday in Frankfurt, Germany.
In Frankfurt, Germany, Las Cruces’ Joscelyn Olayo-Muñoz displayed faster hands and a sharp, accurate left jab in defeating the Czech Republic’s Eliska Ostra by unanimous decision on Thursday at the Brandenburg Cup international amateur boxing tournament.
Olayo-Muñoz, a recent Las Cruces High School graduate, is scheduled to face Italy’s Amelia Sula in Saturday’s 106-pound championship match. Sula defeated Germany’s Cinnia Hofmann.
Thursday’s was Olayo-Muñoz’s first international bout.
Danny Melendrez, Olayo-Muñoz’s stepfather and coach, watched the bout from Las Cruces via streaming. It was the first time, he said via Facebook message, he hadn’t physically been in her corner for a fight.
Olayo-Muñoz had called him from Germany at 2:30 a.m. MT, he said, for a final review of the game plan for Thursday’s bout.
The game plan and Olayo-Muñoz’s execution of it were near-flawless.
Crystal Olayo, Olayo-Muñoz’s mother, made the trip to Germany for the tournament.
