Boxing: Sanchez stopped by TKO in 8th
Albuquerque’s Jose Luis Sanchez, left, battles Avious Griffin during their bout on Thursday at Sony Hall in New York City. Griffin defeated Sanchez by eighth-round TKO.
Avious Griffin’s punching power, it turned out, was all too real.
Albuquerque’s Jose Luis “Guero” Sanchez, knocked down three times in the first two rounds, battled Griffin into the eighth before being stopped by TKO at Sony Hall on Thursday in New York City.
Sanchez is now 14-5-1 with four KOs. Griffin, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, is 17-0 with 16 KOs.
With the victory, Griffin earned the WBC US welterweight title.
The Duke City fighter became the first of Griffin’s opponents to last past the sixth round. The one victory by decision on Griffin’s record was in a six-round bout.
Sanchez was stopped short of the distance for the second time in his career, having lost by seventh-round TKO to fellow Albuquerquean Josh Torres in March 2013 in the third bout of Sanchez’s pro career.
