Hosfeld named new Lobos volleyball coach
He comes to Albuquerque off success at Wichita State
Brian Hosfeld, an associate head coach in a highly successful program at Wichita State the past four years and with some 30 years' experience in the sport, has been named the new head volleyball coach at the University of New Mexico.
Hosfeld succeeds Jon Newman-Gonchar, whose contract was not renewed after the recently completed 2025 season.
UNM Athletic Director Fernando Lovo, whose hires for football (Jason Eck) and men's basketball (Eric Olen) have been highly successful thus far, said in a news release he's confident the pattern will continue with Hosfeld.
Lovo, who just wrapped up his first year leading the department, promoted from within when long-time women's soccer coach Heather Dyche resigned, elevating assistant coach Karley Nelson to the top job in November.
"We couldn't be more excited to begin a new chapter for Lobo Volleyball with Brian at the helm," Lovo said. "He brings an abundance of experience on the biggest stages of collegiate volleyball and is a proven winner with a commitment to the values we share as part of the Lobo family.
"His leadership qualities, character and track record of success stood out to us and will be pivotal as we strive to bring home championships to Albuquerque."
Prior to his four years at Wichita State under head coach Chris Lamb, which included an NCAA Tournament berth in 2024, Hosfeld was the head coach at Baylor from 1996-2003. He guided the Bears to NCAA Tournament berths in 1999 (the program's first ever) and 2003.
Hosfeld served as an assistant coach at Texas from 2004-10. During his time there, the Longhorns went 186-33, won three consecutive Big 12 Conference titles and made the NCAA Tournament Final Four from 2008-10, advancing to the title match in 2009.
He also brings experience in club and international volleyball. In 1997, he coached the United States World University Games team to a silver medal in Sicily.
On the club scene, he worked in Texas, Arizona and Idaho before returning to college volleyball in Wichita in 2022.
In a news release, Hosfeld expressed gratitude for the opportunity presented him at UNM and eagerness to get started.
"The opportunity to build alongside our student-athletes — developing them on and off the court — is what excites me the most," Hosfeld said. "UNM is a special place with good history, and I can't wait to begin this journey with the Lobo family."
