Lobo forward Mustapha Amzil, again, leads Finland to win in World University Games

Dayton transfer Mustapha Amzil, of Finland, will play for UNM in the 2023-24 season.

It was another big game Sunday for new Lobo Mustapha Amzil for Team Finland in the World University Games being played in Chengdu, China.

For the second-consecutive day, the 6-foot-9 transfer from the University of Dayton, led his home country in scoring (18 points) and rebounding (11, tying with teammate Touko Tainamo) and had a game-high 5 assists in an 80-56 win over South Korea.

Finland is now 2-0 in Group D play, having beat Azerbaijan 105-43 on Saturday behind Amzil’s 18 point, 12 rebound game.

In Sunday’s win, Amzil shot 9-of-17 (52.9%) from the floor — 7-of-12 (58.3%) on 2s and 2-of-5 (40.0%) on 3s.

Finland clinched a spot in the elimination round, which begins Wednesday.

Amzil transferred to UNM from the University Dayton in April after two seasons with the Flyers.

He started 33 of the 88 games he played in three seasons at Dayton, averaging this past season 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 52.7% on 2-point shots and 36.6% on 3-point shots (45-of-123).

Amzil is one of four Division I transfers joining the Lobos this offseason, joining center Nelly Junior Joseph from Iona, wing Jemarl Baker Jr. from Fresno State, and forward Isaac Mushilla from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
