New Lobo Mustapha Amzil shines in World University Games debut
Dayton transfer Mustapha Amzil, of Finland, will play for UNM in the 2023-24 season.
University of New Mexico men’s basketball forward Mustapha Amzil shined for his home country on Saturday morning in opening round action of the World University Games in Chengdu, China.
Amzil, a 6-foot-9 transfer from Dayton after three seasons with the Flyers, led Team Finland to a blowout 105-43 win over Azerbaijan in group play action of the international event.
Amzil tied for a team-high 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds (6 defensive, 6 offensive), 4 steals and 1 blocked shot in the win in Pool D, which also includes South Korea and is the only three-team group in the tournament.
Finland and South Korea play Sunday. The top two teams from each group advance to the elimination round, beginning Wednesday.
He started 33 of the 88 games he played at Dayton, averaging this past season 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 52.7% on 2-point shots and 36.6% on 3-point shots (45-of-123).
