New Mexico United parts ways with career scoring leader after knee injury
Chris Wehen, New Mexico United's all-time leading scorer, reinjured his knee and will not play for the squad in 2024.
Chris Wehan, New Mexico United’s career leader in goals and assists, will not be returning to the squad.
The club announced Monday that Wehan, 30, reinjured his knee, “bringing his time with United to a close.”
Wehan leaves as United’s all-time leader in goals (37) and assists (18), and is fifth, all-time, in appearances (102) over parts of five seasons. “Beez,” as he’s known, was particularly dangerous on free kicks and had a knack for breaking down opposing defenses. He created 171 chances in his NMU career.
Wehan played for the UNM men’s soccer team before starting his USLC career with Reno. There, he was named Rookie of the Year in 2017.
Injuries derailed Wehan’s season in 2023. He appeared in just six games, scoring two goals and recording one assist.
United did not further detail Wehan’s knee injury in its announcement.
“New Mexico United wishes Chris the best in his recovery, and will be forever grateful for his contributions to this club and this state,” the release stated. “The club will celebrate Chris throughout the year, but right now is focused on supporting him through his rehabilitation.”
United’s preseason intrasquad scrimmage is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Sandia Casino Amphitheater. The team kicks off its regular season with a 2 p.m. home match against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on March 9.
