Paul Weir, a longtime basketball coach and sports administrator in New Mexico, has been named the deputy athletic director and chief operating officer for Abilene Christian University.

"My family and I are pinching ourselves that this door has opened for us at ACU," Weir said in a news release. "To embark upon joint excellence as a Christian, in the classroom, and as an athlete is a journey we can't wait to serve."

Since 2021, Weir, 44, has been the athletic director at Eastern New Mexico University. He was the head men's basketball coach at New Mexico State and New Mexico before his administrative career.

Weir arrived at NMSU in 2007 as an assistant basketball coach. In 2016, he was named head coach and led the Aggies to a 28-6 record, a Western Athletic Conference tournament championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. After one year at the helm in Las Cruces, he left for in-state rival UNM, where he coached for four years, amassing a 58-63 record in Albuquerque. He stepped down after a 6-16 season in 2021.
