Prep cross country: Rio Rancho boys, Los Alamos girls win Jamboree
Cleveland’s Lucas Espinosa (937) finished first in a cross country meet at Cleveland High School, Aug. 23. La Cueva’s Nikko Mihan (867) was second. This week at the Rio Rancho Jamboree, Mihan finished second and Espinosa fourth.
RIO RANCHO — Billy Romero of Taos and Carmen Dorsey-Spitz of Moriarty were the championship division winners on Saturday morning at the Rio Rancho Jamboree.
The Jamboree is one of the state’s largest and most prestigious cross country meets.
Romero had a winning time of 15 minutes, 40.8 seconds, and he finished about 2½ seconds ahead of La Cueva’s Nikko Mihan (15:43.2).
Elijah England of Navajo Prep, Lucas Espinosa of Cleveland and Tagoya Pedro of Laguna-Acoma rounded out the top five individual finishers in the championship race.
Dorsey-Spitz, who was coming off an outstanding runner-up finish at the previous week’s University of New Mexico Invitational, where she placed second behind Eldorado’s Gianna Rahmer, dominated the field on Saturday.
She completed the course in 17 minutes, 25.7 seconds. That was 1 minute and 24 seconds ahead of runner-up Ensley Jorgenson of Los Alamos (18:49.7).
Mariah Galbraith of Rio Rancho placed third, followed by Alina Trujillo-Sando of Cleveland, and Grace Montoya of Los Alamos.
Rio Rancho’s boys scored 57 points to take the team title in the championship division. La Cueva (79) was second. Cleveland (107) was third.
Los Alamos’ girls had a terrific meet, scoring 37 points, and placing all five runners in the top 15.
Cleveland (80) was next, then La Cueva (93), Rio Rancho (98) and Miyamura (174).
In the boys varsity individual race, Brayden King of Menaul (17:12.1), by 43 seconds over Julian Chavez of Cuba, and Laila Martinez of Grants (21:13.0) were the race winners.
Navajo Prep (63) and Cuba (88) were atop the boys team standings in the varsity division race. Grants (60) and East Mountain (75) were 1-2 in the varsity girls’ race.
