Week 10 prep football games to watch
1. Volcano Vista at Cleveland, 7 p.m. Friday: The Hawks’ solid defense is going to face some challenges here, with multiple backs capable of carrying the load for Cleveland behind that big offensive line, and QB Jordan Hatch, whose development has been coming along nicely. Not quite a District 1-6A championship game, but it has the feel of one.
2. Valencia at St. Pius, Wilson Stadium, 7 p.m. Friday: As Week 9 began, both these teams were in the mix for a District 2-4A championship, and so the stakes will be extremely high in this Week 10 matchup.
3. Valley at Los Alamos, 7 p.m. Friday: The Vikings have been fighting an uphill battle pretty much since the first week of the season given their slow start, but now Valley is presented with a chance to collect a huge District 1-5A victory, against the team, the Hilltoppers, that lead the district.
4. Eunice at Jal, 7 p.m. Friday: Gotta include one of the great small-school rivalry games in New Mexico. In fact, it is difficult to think of one at the 2A level that carries more annual regional weight than when the Cardinals and Panthers square off.
5. Deming at Lovington, 6 p.m. Friday: Two teams ranked in the top four hook up here, and it’s a great QB matchup between Ryan Alfaro of the Wildcats (Deming) and Mathew Prudencio of the Wildcats (Lovington). As is the case every week in District 2-5A, so much on the line as all the guaranteed playoff teams in this league jostle for seeding position.
