‘Scrappy, but disciplined’

I have been decisively impressed with the UNM women’s basketball team this season. They seem to have that extra element of something that allows them to come back in the face of stiff opposition and prevail when they are not expected to. Like all basketball teams, they have games when their shooting is off, but they eventually make the shots that have to be made to bring them back from impending defeat. They are scrappy, but disciplined; they follow their game plan, but improvise as needed to regain the lead and to give the other team “a run for their money.” They seem to have solid team chemistry and a desire to win, and they never give up. They were placed in the bottom half of the standings in the preseason, but have finished their season in second place, and as a number two seed in the MWC Tournament. Hopefully we get some of their tournament games on television. Great season, Lobos.

Something to chew on

I’m thinking that Geoff Grammer must be a closet CPA. I’ve read the sports page in now five different major metropolitan newspapers where I’ve lived, and have never seen anybody seemingly so obsessed with statistics/data! Numbers are great, but they seem to take up roughly 50% of his columns. I would much rather read true analysis, with numbers sprinkled in here and there to emphasize a point. For example, the Lobos have been (with the exception of the win over the Fresno State jayvees) pretty sluggish of late. They are clearly underachieving based on their considerable individual talents. X’s and O’s issue? Motivation issue? In-game course-correction issue? More meat on the bone maybe.
