Bekhzod Usmonov, says Mike Winkeljohn, is impossible not to like. Yes, he hits people for a living, but never with malice. He just happens to be good at it.

“He never stops smiling, never stops saying nice things to people,” said Winkeljohn, one of Usmonov’s coaches at Albuquerque’s Jackson-Wink MMA.

Recently, Usmonov, his wife, Victoria, and Maximus, the couple’s 1-year-old son, were involved in a violent car crash.

Victoria and Maximus are hospitalized with serious and debilitating injuries. Usmonov was injured as well.

“We’re hoping for the best, praying,” Winkeljohn said.

Usmonov is 11-5 as an MMA fighter and 2-1 as bare-knuckle fighter but did not have a fight scheduled when the accident occurred. He hasn’t fought since Feb. 28, when he defeated Keith Richardson by first-round TKO on a BKFC bare-knuckle card at the Kiva Auditorium.

Winkeljohn has established a fundraising account for the Usmonovs. To access the account, go to GoFundMe.com, click on the search icon and type in Usmonov’s name.
