Who’s in and who’s out for UNM as the portal closes

Seven Lobos have found new homes entering Friday, the final day of the transfer window

UNM tight end Dorian Thomas (7) is tackled by Michigan linebacker Ernest Hausmann, bottom left, during the second half of an Aug. 30 game in Ann Arbor, Mich. Thomas was perhaps the most notable portal departure for UNM this cycle, committing to California.

As of Thursday, the total count of college football players in the transfer portal — at all levels — has swelled to just over 10,500.

But for coaches, fans and media tracking one of the busiest portal cycles in recent memory, there might not be a more important number than the figure Friday represents.

One.

As in, one more day.

That’s because Friday is the 16th and final day of the FBS and FCS transfer window; the last opportunity for the overwhelming majority of players to formally enter their names into the portal before next season — and next year’s portal cycle.

Players already entered can commit to — and even withdraw from — new programs freely in the coming days and weeks. But for programs like New Mexico, most of its roster turnover has already taken place, and a much clearer picture of who the Lobos lost, landed and retained is what remains.

One last look at who's in, who's out and who's staying for UNM as the transfer window comes to a close:
