John Joseph Whiteman John Joseph Whiteman died peacefully of natural causes on November 3, 2024 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Johnny was born in Corrales on March 9, 1927, the youngest of nine children of Hugh and Josephine Whiteman. Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, Sybl, and all eight of his siblings. He is survived by three children, Bill (Debbie), Terri (Wes) and Jeff (Julia) as well as numerous grandchildren and his favorite niece, Sharon. Johnny served in the U.S. Army in Korea during the Korean conflict and planned to attend college on his discharge. However, shortly after his discharge and return to Albuquerque he was invited by his bother to a party where he met Stretch Bolles and Hardy Swayze of the New Mexico State Highway Department. He was offered a job on the spot and decided to postpone his college plans and save up some money. Over 40 years later Johnny retired from the Highway Department after working on highway projects throughout the state. Johnny lived in Albuquerque for over 65 years after his discharge from the Army and loved every minute of it. In his later years he fondly remembered some of his favorite cars, from his red 1954 Buick Roadmaster to his turquoise 1957 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. He was a constant and reliable source of information for his friends and family as to the whereabouts of many long forgotten roads and towns in New Mexico as well as the best place to buy everything from tamales to shrimp cocktails. Johnny and Sybl moved to Scottsdale in 2016 to be nearer to family, but left their hearts in Albuquerque. The family will schedule a celebration of Johnny's life in Albuquerque in the spring.
