Doña Ana County deputy killed in interstate crash
LAS CRUCES —A Doña Ana County deputy died Tuesday evening after rear-ending a semitrailer on Interstate 10 in Las Cruces.
Patrol deputy Antonio Aleman, 33, was on duty when he crashed into the truck in the eastbound lanes at about 5 p.m., during rush hour in an area close to extensive road construction.
The circumstances of the crash, or the speed the vehicles were traveling, were not immediately clear.
At 7 p.m., the marked vehicle still sat on the highway showing extensive damage to the front end, especially on the driver’s side. All lanes were closed with traffic diverted to the nearest exit to the west, and a line of vehicles stood for more than a mile.
The county stated in a Tuesday night announcement that Aleman was transported to MountainView Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The county said Aleman had been with the sheriff’s office since April 2021, and is survived by a wife and two children.
As rain fell over Las Cruces, a procession of police vehicles could be seen escorting Aleman to the Office of the Medical Investigator, with deputies planning to accompany Aleman until he is returned home and laid to rest.
