Four dead over weekend: 3 from apparent murder-suicide, other 'appears to be' self-defense
The Albuquerque Police Department is investigating an apparent murder-suicide and a possible self-defense that happened in the matter of hours in Southeast Albuquerque late Sunday and early Monday.
On Sunday evening, APD responded to a call of three unresponsive people inside a home in the 100 block of Pennsylvania, by Central.
APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said a 22-year-old man fatally shot his 20-year-old sister and 17-year-old brother. Their mother came home and found them with gunshot wounds to the head before calling police. The motive is unknown.
“It’s a real tragedy,” he said at Monday afternoon’s press conference.
At about 4:15 a.m. Monday, Gallegos said detectives then responded to a call of a shooting inside a home in the 500 block of Ortiz, near San Mateo and Zuni.
Gallegos said someone tried to break into a 77-year-old man’s home when the owner shot the intruder, who was armed with a knife. The suspect later died.
No charges have been filed as it “appears to be self-defense,” Gallegos said.
He said both cases are still under investigation.
